Sympetrum illotum (Cardinal Meadowhawk)

An American cousin of our European darters, which are referred to in America as meadowhawks. There are two meadowhawks in Costa Rica.

Males of Sympetrum illotum are characterised by a fairly plain red abdomen, two light patches on the thorax side and small dark spots at the base of each hind wing.
