Costa Rica has 11 described species of shadowdamsel and apparently there are a further 4 species yet to be described. These are damselflies of forest streams that like conditions shadier than we are used to with our European damselflies. They are characterized by having clear wings held closed well above their slender abdomen.
We saw just one example and, given that there is a lookalike in the same territory, along with the four undescribed suspects, this just has to go down as Palaemnema sp. This suspect was at the tree-lined stream flowing through the grounds of Hotel Villa Zurqui.
