Vestalis amethystina (Common Flashwing)

occurs in SingaporeThese characters are clearly similar to our European Demoiselles and are part of the same family. They also like to hang around clear forest streams, which is a habit shared by Calopteryx virgo (Beautiful Demoiselle), in my experience.

Here you can see the effect of correctly angled flash photography [not sure what the correct angle is – this seemed to be a matter of luck] on the wings of this female, which I imagine leads to both the binomial and vernacular names. If I get a chance, I must try the flash technique on a female C. virgo and, maybe, C. splendens to see if anything similar happens.
