Brachythemis lacustris (Red Groundling)

This is another one-shot only suspect from our hotel in Livingstone, Zambia, 2022. This wasn’t on “our” pond but we found it having widened our search to the grounds of the hotel.

I didn’t realize what I was looking at when taking the picture; it looked a lot like Trithemis kirbyi (Orange-winged Dropwing). Back at home, though, I spotted the bi-coloured pterostigmas that mark it as a Red Groundling.

ID Notes

  • ♂ – broad yellow wing root patches
  • ♂ – bi-coloured pterostigmas
  • ♂ – short, stout red abdomen (mature)
