Mature males of E. peruviana have a blue-black pruinose thorax and a bright red abdomen with the basal segment black. There is, in my mind, a confusion species for mature males in Planiplax sanguiniventris (Mexican Scarlet Tail). Indeed, at first I thought that my specimen of P. sanguiniventris was E. peruviana but Phil’s entry on iNaturalist sorted me out.
The females and immature males of E. peruviana look totally different to the mature male as seen in my pictures below; “Flame-tailed Pondhawk” seems utterly inappropriate here. This specimen is an immature male as shown by the rather poor second photo but which just about shows male appendages. Immatures and females of P. sanguiniventris do not look like these.
