Orthemis discolor (Carmine Skimmer)

Together with the closely related O. ferruginea, I think the two constitute my Costa Rican terrible twins of the dragonfly world, the adult males being rather tricky to distinguish. According to the writings of Dennis Paulson, O. discolor has both brighter eyes and brighter face compared to O. ferruginea. The body is a stronger pink with less in the way of purplish hue, too.

I was nervous about separating my photographic specimens but through iNaturalist Dennis himself has confirmed my ids, I’m happy to say [and thank you].
