There are two Australian Aethriamanta species distinguished mainly by the shape of the dark hind-wing root patch, known in the vernacular as Square-spot and L-spot Baskers.
I met a single example of this, Aethriamanta circumsignata (Square-spot Basker) on FNQ 2022. The lighting was not advantageous but I got at least mainly recognizable shots. I did much better in 2024 flying solo.
Whilst going through my 2019 shots, I found that I’d missed its cousin, Aethriamanta nymphaeae (L-spot Basker) – a mistake of the inexperienced with Ozzie dragonflies.
