Microgomphus wijaya (Sri Lanka Wijaya’s Scissortail)

I thought this would prove to be something special as soon as I saw it. That was because I recognized it as a gomphid and 11 of the 14 species in Sri Lanka are endemic. I wasn’t wrong, though it took a little while to home in on the precise species.

These photos are all of the same teneral female, which flew up before me at the river beside Athgira River Camp towards the end of our trip. She was not well positioned, quite high in the streamside vegetation, and I had to work hard for the images that I did get.

Id Notes

  • black and yellow, as most gomphids
  • thorax has two broad triangular yellow patches
