Austrophlebia costalis (Southern Giant Darner)

One of our more exciting finds on the 2019 Odonatours trip to southeast Queensland, a species endemic to eastern Australia. This is thought to be a very fast flying dragonfly, apparently often inhabiting shady forested areas.

In the forest at Green Falls, Mount Glorious, we saw just one individual which was sheltering beneath foliage being blown about by a variable stiff breeze, so photography was tricky to say the least. I was very happy to get the two half-way decent, essentially identical pictures below.

Id Notes

  • very large and essentially brown
  • 2 light cream stripes on thorax
  • prominent broad red-brown band behind the costas of both wings (both sexes)
  • distinctively angled, rather short upper appendages
