Hind-wing Patch

Two genera of Anisoptera (dragonflies) have hind-wings with a dark patch at the base: Leucorrhinia (Whitefaces/White-faced Darters) and Libellula (Chasers).

These genera can be separated by the number of antenodal cross (Ax) veins.

Less than 10 antenodal cross veins

More than 12 antenodal cross veins

If the Ax veins are not visible, what about the pterostigmas?

short pterostigmas, thick front to back

longer, narrower pterostigmas
